The SPC Book Club recently gathered to discuss Memorial Stones: Volume 2, a powerful collection of testimonies highlighting God’s faithfulness and provision in times of need. A follow-up to Memorial Stones Volume 1 – Testimonies of God’s Faithfulness and Provision in Times of Need, this book is more than just a compilation of stories; it is a deeply moving testament to the resilience of faith, the power of words and the importance of obedience to God’s plan.

A Journey Through Testimonies

Memorial Stones Volume 2 offers readers a glimpse into the author’s personal experiences of faith and perseverance. Lona Isaacs shared how she navigated life’s challenges through divine guidance, unwavering trust, and obedience to God. The discussion revealed how these stories resonated with the members, inspiring reflection and encouragement.

One key takeaway from the discussion was the importance of sharing one’s testimony. Club members, including other self-published authors, found parallels between their own lives and the stories in the book. They emphasized how testimonies serve as reminders of God’s presence, especially in difficult times, and how they can uplift others who may be facing similar struggles.  

Obedience to God’s Plan 

A significant theme that emerged from the book club discussion was the importance of obedience to God’s plan. Drawing from the book, members explored how stepping out in faith can lead to unexpected blessings even when the path is unclear. The chapter on “Wrong Move” was particularly impactful as the author decided to take on a new role in her career without consulting God. She faced physical and emotional turmoil until she decided to walk away. What seemed like a failure as she returned to her old post proved to be an opportunity to walk in obedience to God.

The book’s emphasis on obedience deeply resonated with the members. It reminded us that God’s direction may not always align with personal desires but is always rooted in His perfect plan. The lesson from this chapter reinforced the importance of faithfulness and trust, even when circumstances seem uncertain.

Mental Health, Healing, and the Power of Words

Another profound aspect of the meeting was the discussion on mental health, particularly within the Christian community. Memorial Stones Volume 2 touches on emotional struggles and the necessity of seeking support. The author shared her journey with depression, detailing how she overcame negative thoughts through counselling and medication. We all acknowledged the stigma around mental health and the need for greater awareness, especially within faith communities.

The “father wound” was a high point of our discourse that resonated with multiple members. Admittedly, there is also something to be said about the “mother wound;” however, the “father wound” is expressly more prominent in Jamaican society. Despite having her father in the home and her life up to his death, the author realized that he was not present, which caused a disconnect. In her youth, she yearned for her father’s attention; it wasn’t until later in life that she understood that her father struggled with his own wounds and could not give what he had no experience with. She also understood that her expectations of her father were based on her love language, which differed from his. This leads to the thought that greater attention is needed to address the emotional wounds we experience.

The power of words was also a key topic. The stories in the book illustrate how words spoken over our lives—positive or negative—can shape our identity and purpose. Members reflected on how they had personally overcome the impact of harmful words, emphasizing the need to speak life and encourage others.

Strengthening Community Through Shared Stories

There was a consensus that storytelling remains one of the most powerful ways to inspire, encourage, and uplift others. Being inspired by the book, members are committed to remaining faithful to their calling, recognizing that their words can transform lives.
