Devotional: Co-Labourers with God
•
For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” – 1 Corinthians 3:9

Today is being celebrated as Labour Day in Jamaica and many of us will be busy working on various project at home, church or in our community. That is quite commendable as we all need to play our part in impacting the spaces in our areas of influence. Taking part in Labour Day activities is an excellent way to participate in nation building, and at the same time fostering a spirit of community and togetherness. The time of food and fellowship after hours of hard labour is an added bonus, the icing on the cake which is anticipated by many.
As admirable as it is to work on Labour Day, it pales in comparison with working in the vineyard of God. As children of God, we are partners in His plan and our ultimate aim should be to do our part in establishing and building His Kingdom, so that His will is done on earth as in Heaven. There is nothing more important than this. We are encouraged in the Scriptures to do the works of Him who sent us while it’s day, for when the night comes there will be no time to work (John 9:4). Yes, there is a set time within which this work must be accomplished. because there is a season for everything under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
God’s work must be our priority. We are Kingdom Builders, created in advance to do the good works that He has prepared for us to do.(Ephesians 2:10). We are called to build each other up and to bear one another’s burdens. (Galatians 6:2). Let us get busy doing what we have been called to do, in the time we have been given. The harvest is ripe, but the labourers are few. (Matthew 9: 37-38). There is no room for idling and complacency. Time is of the essence.
We are called generally to dominate the earth and rule because God has given it to us. However, there are specific/ individual assignment that has been given to each of us based on God’s purpose for our lives, our giftings, talents and abilities. Let us seek to identify them by asking our Maker, our Manufacturer, our Creator, what He had in mind for us when He created us.
It’s time to get off the sidelines and get involved in the work of the Lord. Each of us is called to fulfill the Great Commission and spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. Soul winning is our greatest work, and the Word says that He that winneth souls is wise (Proverbs 11:30).
Let us heed the call and get to work. The rewards are out of this world and will last forever!
Meditate on the words of this song as you work.
Reflection
- Have I discovered what God is calling me to do?
- How can I be a become a better worker for Him?
Prayer
Father, I thank you that you have created us to do good works which you prepared in advance for us to carry out. Help us to prioritize this responsibility above all others. Help us to be committed servants and stewards of that which you have entrusted to us. May we serve you joyfully and wholeheartedly, doing with our might what our hands find to do. Let us, like the people in Nehemiah’s time, have a mind to work. We pary in the name of Jesus. Amen.
