This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Joshua 1:8 (KJV)
Yesterday during my morning devotion, the words ‘chew on the word‘ dropped into my spirit and got me thinking.
Eating physical food is a process. First, it is chewed and mixed with saliva then broken down. The nutrients are then absorbed and then transported into the bloodstream so that the body can receive nourishment. As the body is nourished, the immune system is strengthened, allowing the body to function normally and maintain good health.
The word meditate means to think deeply about something. It requires focus, pondering and constantly dwelling on that ‘something’. and bringing it to mind. One classic illustration which is often used to cement the point of meditating is the example of a cow chewing its cud. It chews, swallows, regurgitates, continues to chew, swallow and then regurgitates. This process is repeated several times for maximum effect.
The Word of God is our spiritual food. In order for us to grow and mature in Christ, we must maintain a healthy spiritual diet by eating and chewing/meditating on the Word on a daily basis, as stated in Joshua 1:8. When we hide the Word in our heart, we will not sin against God. In addition, we will have prosperity, good health and good success in whatever we undertake.
Contrary to new age meditation which encourages emptying the mind, biblical meditation encourages us to fill the mind with the Word of God. Having filled the mind with the Word, it’s then time to chew on it….think deeply about it, study it, memorize it, ponder it, bring it to mind, mutter it, keep it at the forefront of your mind. Like the cow, repeat this process constantly until it begins to shape your thinking and actions.
Philippians 4: 8 reminds us to think on the things that are good, pure, noble and true. Do yourself a favour by blocking out the negatives which rob you of peace, and instead, focus on the Word, which brings joy and peace.
As you apply and obey the Word daily, transformation will become evident and spiritual health will be your portion. You will become like the evergreen tree mentioned in Psalm 1, well-watered and bringing forth fruit in due season.
It’s time to pree (meditate on) the Word!
Reflection
- Have I been meditating on the Word of God consistently?
- What steps can I take to be more consistent?
Prayer
Father, thank you for your Word which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Help us to study it and meditate on it day and night so that we may be transformed. Help us to delight in your Word and to taste and see that You are good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
