Think on These Things – It is Better to Give

Without a doubt, we all love to receive – whether it’s a gift, a word of encouragement when we are down and out, a hug, or some well-needed cash. When we receive it makes us feel good, loved, and special.

But there is something even better! The Bible tells us that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35) and this is indeed true. When we give, we are making a difference in the lives of others and making this world a better place. We can give of our time, gifts, and resources in numerous ways. So from being hospitable to someone, donating to charity, volunteering with an organization, preparing a meal for an elderly person, or feeding the poor, the possibilities are endless.

Studies have shown that the act of giving or helping someone has significant health benefits. Giving boosts your physical and mental health. As you help someone. in whatever way you choose, the brain secretes what are commonly called “feel good hormones” – namely serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin.

Serotonin regulates mood, dopamine creates a sense of pleasure, and oxytocin creates a sense of bonding and connection to others. This wonderful mix creates what is called a helper’s high, which boosts self-esteem, increases happiness and satisfaction, and wards off depression. In fact, persons who are suffering from depression are often encouraged to reach out to others through volunteering as this takes the focus off themselves and their situation and brings them a sense of joy and fulfillment. Giving also reduces the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone which causes one to feel anxious and overwhelmed.

My word of encouragement to you is to start giving if you have not been doing so. And if you have been, continue to do so faithfully. In addition to the health benefits, when you give, it will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over as stated in Luke 6:38. God, the Promise Keeper, also promises that when we give to the poor, we are actually lending to Him, and He is no man’s debtor, so He will always repay (Proverbs 19:17).

Giving is a gift that keeps on giving. Look around you. There is always someone that needs your help. Who will you help today?
